Many are familiar with Joseph Campbell's theory of the hero's journey, the idea that every man from Moses to Hercules grows to adulthood while battling his alter-ego. This book explores the universal heroine's journey as she quests through world myth. Numerous stories from cultures as varied as Chile and Vietnam reveal heroines who battle for safety and identity, thereby upsetting popular notions of the passive, gentle heroine. However, a few epic series develop complex villains, including Star Wars, Battlestar Galactica, Smallville, Babylon 5, Game of Thrones, and Buffy the Vampire Slayer. Increasingly, villains' origin stories have found new popularity through films like Wicked, Maleficent, and Despicable Me, alongside shows starring serial killers and Machiavellian schemers. This book examines the villain's decline and subsequent struggle toward redemption. Written for writers, creators, fans, and mythologists, this book offers a peek into the minds of some of fiction's greatest villains.

Robert Proudfoot A Playful Policeman Meets the Citizen-Making Teacher

This biography explores lives and times of the author's grandparents, George and Olive MacDonald, in Edmonton (1906 to 1919). George and Olive were among thousands of migrating people who helped build and shape Edmonton, then a dynamic city of a century ago, but they came west as single twenty-somethings from multi-generational Prince Edward Island families, rather than from Europe, USA or the Orient. George worked as a constable and then a detective with Edmonton Police Service, while Olive taught children at several Beverly or Edmonton public schools. They enjoyed summer picnics, sports, and river cruises, and went lake skating in winter. We recall difficult experiences of war, Spanish Flu, economic bust, floods, and British imperialism.

Such culture affected individuals and communities. In fact, this rich and diverse history awaits the simply curious, as well as serious social historians.

From small towns to big cities, organizers wanted to showcase the best their communities had to offer. But local fairs grew far beyond their humble beginnings as agricultural exhibits. Cassandra Arnold Emergency Blues: Poems from the night shift and other odd hours

I wrote these seventeen poems over the space of a month in the Emergency Department of a major trauma hospital in Sydney, New South Wales.

In between patients, in the dark of night, on coffee break, or catching a moment of sun, I wrestled with what it meant to be the person everyone was leaning on, the one who was supposed to be strong and give answers, not questions of their own.

Being a doctor is a complex business. It relies on the scientific method and analytical thinking, but at its heart also lies compassion and the mystery of being human in the midst of pain.

The place I wrote about is Australia. Everything else is universal.

Claudiu Murgan Crystal Cloud

Water was always on our side—we were the ones who strayed!

In both Water Entanglement and Crystal Cloud I bring forward water’s ability to heal us when treated with reverence and hurt us when treated with ignorance and disrespect so prevalent in our society.

Water surrounds us in every aspect of our life: the morning dew, the afternoon rain shower, the snow, the air’s humidity.

The main idea in Crystal Cloud is that humanity’s ego is what stops us from understanding our true path, it stops us from re-connecting with nature, hence becoming whole again. When gathered together, our individual egos, unwantedly, become a blockage on our path of spiritual evolution.

(Contributor) Schofield Glass And Gardens: Solarpunk Summers

Solarpunk is a type of optimistic science fiction that imagines a future founded on renewable energies. The seventeen stories in this volume are not boring utopias—they grapple with real issues such as the future and ethics of our food sources, the connection or disconnection between technology and nature, and the interpersonal conflicts that arise no matter how peaceful the world is. Holly Schofield's malaphor-filled story involves an intentional community on Vancouver Island.
